Hand made of all solid woods (spruce / rosewood) by master luthier Kuniharu Nobe in the late 1950’s or early 1960’s. Nobe was the master who taught modern master Kazuo Sato before he left Japan. Sato went on to study under Rubio who selected him from many applicants (although he couldn’t speak English) because of the high level of skill he obtained under Nobe. More information on the builder below.

The model number indicates this was a very expensive guitar, probably priced at 120,000 yen. That’s about 6 months salary for a Japanese college graduate in 1960! Beautifully constructed of fine spruce and solid rosewood back and sides, lattice bracing. Tuners work well, bridge is firmly attached. No loose braces. It plays great and sounds amazing with a tone that only comes from a guitar that is more than half a century old and built by a true master luthier. This is consistent with the D-80 model based on the solid German Spruce top, dual plate Brazilian Rosewood back / sides and Grover tuners. I looked at the headstock under blacklight and could see a very faint but readable “Aria Dreadnought” logo there, you can also see some glue residue in the body where the wooden label that was used for the Matsuoka handmade guitars used to be. This guitar sold for 80,000 Japanese Yen in the early 1970's, which would have been about a year's salary for a college graduate at the time! It was near the top of the line, only the D100 with solid back and sides outrank this baby.

The guitar sounds fantastic with a huge, powerful sound like a vintage Martin, you won’t be disappointed. Equipped with Grover tuners and a vintage under bridge pickup (through end pin).

There are a few condition issues I want to point out although nothing serious. There is some white residue inside the guitar from what appears to be an exploded bag of desiccant. The fret board shows some wear in the lower fret positions but the frets are in good shape. Nagoya is Japan’s 4th largest city and a major industrial port city located on the main island of Honshu in Aichi prefecture..

The Nagoya/Aichi/Kani area (Kani is the prefecture next to Aichee) is one of Japan’s major musical instrument making centers. The city and the outlying areas have a long classical guitar making history with many small shops producing guitars. Major guitar and violin makers include Matsumoku Industrial, Suzuki, Takaharu, Sada Yairi, Kazuo Yairi (Kani), Daion, Yamaki, Ibanez/Hoshino, and Ryoji Matsuoka. Additionally, there are numerous small guitar shops and factories that contract to larger firms, such as Yamaha in Hamamatsu.

Matsumoku (not to be confused with Matsuoka) was the largest guitar maker in Nagoya for many years, until it ceased operations in 1987. It is still in operation and sells low to mid-priced classical guitars. The current operation is overseen by Ryoji’s son: Toshiaki Matsuoka. The last that I have heard is that Ryoji is still involved with the company and is the chairman of the board.

For a few years during the 1960s and early 1970s , Matsuoka produced the higher end Aria guitar models for Shiro Arai, founder of Aria . These Aria models either have Ryoji Matsuoka's name on the label or are marked RM with a red stamp on the neck block. Matsuoka also made some models for Ibanez, including a few steel string flatop and archtop models.

During the early 1970s, Matsuoka produced Fleta, Hauser, Kohno and Rubio (David, not GV Rubio) models. They
met Manuel de la Chica, Eduardo Ferrer an Antonio Robles, all of them famous guitar builders in this arabian city. They showed to the young
Pedro the mysteries of this art and they developed a great relationship. Pedro was in love with the flamenco guitar sound and started playing it
with great pleasure. Sometimes "Radio Loja" contacted him to accompany the flamenco singers of the area. It was in 1959 when Pedro Maldonado decided to open his first workshop in
"Calle Caus, 16" where he started making his first guitars.

Since Pedro Maldonado was always a good worker, he started to make excellent instruments right away. It was then that he started receiving orders from "Casa Damas" in Sevilla, a flamenco store with a great
reputation. Pedro made for them some guitars made out of rosewood. He was having more and more orders and after some years he decided to move to
Malaga.
His new workshop was located in "Barriada de Sixto" where soon his instruments attracted the attention of a well known guitarist by the name of "Rafael de Antequera" who was surprised with both the sound and the workmanship of the guitars."If this guitar has a pretty face , the best is its heart, I buy it " he said.
Three years later he moved his shop to a new place in "Avda. Velazquez 59". It was then he received lots of orders and his reputation grew rapidly. He worked 14 hours daily in order to make all the orders he had
from different parts of the world: United States , Japan , Germany , Great Britain , Australia , etc...Music stores were interested in selling Pedro
Maldonado guitars , such as: "Azzato" in Bruxelles , "Ivor Mairants" and
"Juan Teijeiro Music"in London , "Zavaleta Casa de las Guitarras"

Internal Use (Bin) - J3

This was one of the top models in the Morris lineup, great sounding guitar! Look no further! This guitar was hand made by Indiana Master Luthier Charles Dick (see bio below). Charles knows how to get the most out of every instrument, combining classical building techniques with modern approaches to achieve stunning visual and sonic result! This 000 size acoustic will blow your mind, it has excellent power and volume but also great articulation. Every note rings clear and seems to sustain forever. Charles is an expert at top tuning, quite possibly the most essential skill in guitar building. He leaves nothing to chance by vibrating each top to check for dead zones and adjusting the bracing ever so slightly to optimize the outcome. You can clearly hear the difference this makes on your very first strum. There is not a factory in the world that pays that much attention to detail. The last picture shows the top of this guitar during the tuning process which uses glitter to identify the vibration nodes. He also uses extremely high quality woods and is as particular about build quality as anyone I have ever met.
