A beautiful vintage Yamaha L-5 from the company's original Japanese-made L Series, built during Yamaha's highly regarded late-1970s/early-1980s acoustic period.

The L Series represented Yamaha's upscale acoustic line, sitting above the contemporary FG models. The L-5 carried a ¥50,000 original list price and was built in Japan using significantly more refined appointments and materials than Yamaha's entry-level acoustics of the period.

Period specifications for the late L-5 include:

  • Solid spruce top
  • Coral rosewood back and sides
  • Mahogany neck
  • Palisandre / Indian rosewood fingerboard
  • Rosewood bridge
  • 651mm scale length
  • Gold Yamaha TM30G tuners
  • Bound body and fingerboard
  • Tortoise-pattern pickguard
  • Natural gloss finish
  • Made in Japan

These specifications are documented on multiple surviving late L-5 examples, including 1979, 1981 and 1982 instruments.

The back and sides use Yamaha's attractive “Coral Rose” rosewood construction, a material closely associated with this period of Japanese L-Series production. The straight, richly colored grain on this example is particularly attractive.

This guitar has just been cleaned, restrung and set up.

Overall condition is Very Good. It shows light scratches, marks and other normal cosmetic wear expected from a vintage acoustic, but it remains exceptionally attractive overall.

The frets show very little wear. We rate them approximately 9.7/10 with nearly their full useful life remaining.

The natural top has aged to a warm golden color, while the rosewood back and sides, multi-ply binding, bound fingerboard, gold hardware and rosewood-faced headstock give the L-5 a noticeably more upscale appearance than the typical Yamaha FG of the same era.

Includes the fitted vintage hard case shown in the photos. One of the case latches is broken/missing, but the remaining hardware is functional.

A great example of Yamaha's golden-era Japanese acoustic production and an increasingly appreciated model from the original L-Series lineup.
