2006-08 Fender Japan AJB-66 Aerodyne Jazz Bass Black Matching Headstock

Japanese-market Fender Japan AJB-66 Aerodyne Jazz Bass finished in Black with a matching black headstock and cream body binding.

This is the domestic-market Aerodyne configuration rather than the stripped-down export version. The AJB-66 uses the distinctive carved/radiused Aerodyne body along with a P/J pickup layout, chrome control plate and matching headstock. Period examples are documented with a basswood body, maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, 34" scale and 7.25" fingerboard radius.

The electronics are the classic Aerodyne P/J setup:

• Precision-style split-coil neck pickup
• Jazz Bass-style bridge pickup
• Two volume controls
• Master tone

That combination gives it considerably more range than a conventional Jazz Bass, with the thicker low-mid response of the P pickup available alongside the more focused bridge Jazz pickup.

Serial number S098788 is marked “Crafted in Japan.” Fender dates Crafted in Japan S-prefix instruments to approximately 2006-2008, which lines up directly with the documented production period for the AJB-66.

Overall condition is Very Good. There is general cosmetic wear throughout from normal use, including scattered scratches, small marks and wear to the glossy black finish. The back in particular shows some light surface scratching, but there is nothing that takes away significantly from the overall appearance.

The original pickguard is missing. The mounting holes are still present around the face of the bass, as shown clearly in the photos. I would disclose this prominently since these originally carried a black 3-ply pickguard.

The frets show minimal wear and have been rated approximately 9.4/10 with plenty of life remaining.

A very cool Japanese-market Aerodyne from the mid-2000s, especially with the black finish, matching headstock and cream binding.
