Fender Japan TL67-650SPL '67 Telecaster 3-Tone Sunburst

A very cool and uncommon Fender Japan TL67-650SPL, finished in 3-Tone Sunburst.

The TL67-650SPL is one of the more distinctive Telecaster models from Fender Japan's vintage-era lineup. Rather than a conventional '67-style Telecaster, Fender gave this model a factory neck humbucker, bridge single coil and substantial six-saddle brass bridge, creating a configuration reminiscent of the modified late-'60s Telecasters associated with Keith Richards.

The TL67-650SPL appears in Fender Japan's 1990 catalog with the following factory specifications:

One particularly cool feature is that large brass bridge assembly. At first glance it looks like an aftermarket upgrade, but this is actually the bridge Fender specified for the TL67-650SPL from the factory. It contributes to the unusually substantial feel of this guitar, which weighs in at a hefty 10 lbs 12.5 oz.

This guitar has just been cleaned, restrung and set up and is playing nicely.

Overall condition is Very Good, with normal play wear and cosmetic wear consistent with its age. There are scattered scratches and small marks throughout, along with visible aging and patina on the brass bridge and hardware. Nothing particularly distracting, and the 3-Tone Sunburst still presents beautifully with plenty of visible ash grain.

The maple fingerboard is in especially nice shape. Fret wear is quite light, and we would rate the remaining fret life at approximately 9/10.

A great example of one of the less common Fender Japan Telecaster variants. Between the white ash body, factory brass bridge, H/S pickup configuration and late-'60s styling, the TL67-650SPL has considerably more personality than a standard vintage-reissue Telecaster.
